In 1910, he founded the worlds first instant coffee manufacturing plant, in Brooklyn.G. Washington Coffee really began to prosper in 1914 after WW1 started. When the US government discovered that the caffine in coffee gave the soldiers an extra energy boost they turned to the instant coffee producer because of their manufacturing capabilities.The beverage quickly achieved popularity with the soldiers, who nicknamed it a "cup of George." G. Washington became the most important military coffee supplier during World War I. The company closed their doors in 1961. The last remnant of the brand survives in G. Washington's Seasoning & Broth, a sideline developed in 1938.
