He had taken some art lessons from his uncle, Teodoro Buenaventura, and later developed his own style of painting. For many years he worked in the National Museum doing botanical drawings under the famous botanist, Dr. Eduardo Quisumbing , who was at that time the Director of the Museum.Bernardo’s paintings of orchids in their natural habitat were considered one of the best paintings of that class. In 1963 he won a scholarship to Italy on restoration. This study was greatly needed by the Museum for the repair of its many treasures, which at that time, were in poor condition. Later he traveled to Germany and Belgium visiting centers of art and art restoration to improve his knowledge on this line.By 1964 he came back to start his restoration of the badly damaged art collection of the National Museum. The following year, he was appointed as the first Curator of the Presidential Museum in Malacanang until 1986. He also taught for a while at the University of the East – School of Fine Arts. After retiring from the Museum, he worked in his home restoring paintings brought to him by art collectors. In between his works as a restorer, Professor Bernardo paints landscapes and still lifes and other subjects which interest him.
