Who was Quetzalcoatl? Quetzalcóatl was one of the most representative and emblematic deities of Pre-Hispanic mythology. His presence was essential for the Toltec, Mexica and Maya ethnic groups, since he was in charge of bringing them the “Toltecáyotl” (knowledge) to all the community. Quetzalcóatl was present in almost all cultures since ancient times. He was a god of wind, culture, knowledge and creation. In some stories he created humanity, and in others he worked with his brother to shape the earth itself. What is the meaning of Quetzalcoatl? The word Quetzalcóatl is of Nahuatl origin and is made up of the words "quetzal" which refers to the bird that lives in the jungle of southern Mexico and in some parts of Central America and "cóatl" which means snake. So, we can translate the word Quetzalcóatl as "feathered serpent". Quetzalcoatl the legend of the man who became a god. This myth tells us about the arrival in Tollan -Tula- of a man with vast knowledge of the world and the arts, as well as remarkable intelligence and a mastery of practices such as agriculture, navigation and stargazing. Physically, he had a fair complexion, blond hair and a thick beard that further embellished his face and contrasted with the original people of Tollan. He came to the Toltec people to share his knowledge (Toltecayotl) with the inhabitants of Tollan (Tula), the most important city of this civilization. Thus he earned respect as a being of immeasurable power and wisdom and opposed human sacrifice. Quetzalcoatl was living a period of total apogee and this caused the wrath of three deities: Tezcatlipoca, Huitzilopochtli and Xipe Tótec. These three envious gods longed for the return of human sacrifices among the Toltecs. So they based on deceit they made Quetzalcóatl get drunk with pulque and he insulted to his family. The next day, Quetzalcoatl realized what he had done and felt devastated, he could never repair the damage of the sin committed, so sad and ashamed, he decided to head east and abandon his community, but not before promising that he would return one day. The cult of 'The Feathered Serpent' grew larger, reaching the southeast of the country and Central America where it received the name of Kukulkan for the Mayans or Gucumatz for the Quiché of Guatemala. Various pyramids from these and other civilizations show decorations with feathered serpent heads in honor of this deity. The cult of Quetzalcoatl also extended to the powerful Aztec empire where he was given other attributes: he was associated with the planet Venus, he was considered the god of learning, science, arts, crafts, and agriculture. Unfortunately for the Aztec people, the prophecy was fulfilled on November 8, 1519 when the Spanish general Hernán Cortés arrived in Greater Tenochtitlán, beginning the conquest of Mexico. That day he met with the Tlatoani Moctezuma, who despite the warnings of his relatives, was convinced that the visitors were envoys of the god Quetzalcóatl (if not that Cortés was the Quetzalcoatl himself), for this reason he was a splendid host & filled his guests with gifts, such as the headdress of the God Quetzalcóatl (Moctezuma's Penacho), which was sent along with other presents to the Spanish Imperial Court. Cortés not only took great treasures from the Aztec empire but ended up destroying an entire civilization that finally fell defeated in 1521. This allowed the expansion of the Spanish not only through the Valley of Mexico but throughout the country. Quetzalcóatl was back, but definitely not in the way his devotees expected. There are many myths and stories around Quetzalcoatl, but this is one of the most resonant and that makes sense, we love to tell stories and myths like this, but don't stay with this story, we invite you to investigate more on the subject, there are many more fascinating stories that you will love.
