Pre-columbian Priest Head from the Maya Culture of Mexico - A delicate jewel

Description: Free Shipping included anywhere in the United States This male priest head is from the Late Classic Maya Period which existed between 600 to 900 CE. It is in Southern Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, that the Maya built their greatest cities in dense tropical forests. This required a lot of energy to clear the surrounding jungles for planting and erecting its temples. Considered an unparalleled achievement, the Maya culture has been thoroughly studied. Much of the maya art was dedicated to the apotheosis of their great priests, to their gods and to their fabulous concept of time. This priest head is from the Jaina Island off the coast of Campeche in Northern Yucatan. It was most likely part of a portable ceremonial statue. A handsome example of Mayan art, it has many facial life-like details. With drooping eyelids, well defined nose and thick lips, is has what looks like tattoos around the bottom of the face. Some tattoo like marks is also seen on the forehead. The headdress is simple and wraps around the face. On the shoulders he wears what looks like a ceremonial cape. Delicately molded from fine clay, this original piece is a must have for any pre-Columbian art collector and enthusiast. Wooden stand included.
