This is an Antique, 19th century, Pristine Mint, George Wostenholm / Sheffield IXL Mother of Pearl 3 bladed scarce bolster less Lobster pattern pocketknife that is in unsharpened condition, with the original crocus of Iron blade polish. Note that this pocketknife is bolster less, i.e., there are no metal bolsters at the pivot pins to support the blades. This IXL pocketknife was made in Sheffield, the knife capitol of the world at the time, and for hundreds of years prior. Wostenholm, along with Joseph Rodgers, were the two premier Sheffield cutlers from the 18th through the 19th centuries. Wostenholm knives are considered much rarer than the more prolific maker Joseph Rodgers. Please refer to the article by the late, great Bill Williamson; "I*XL Means - I Excel". As early as the 18th Century, the Wostenholm name was well known. The firm won Gold Medals at numerous International Exhibitions. Wolstenholm personally made dozens of trips to America; and by 1862, IXL was almost exclusively exporting to the American market. They used only the finest steel and materials, such as this Presentation Quality Mother of Pearl. All of IXL's knives demonstrate the quality of Artisanship and Craftsmanship of the best Master Cutlers in Sheffield. This is an Antique pristine mint, unsharpened 3 bladed Sheffield made bolster less pocketknife in a slightly unequal ended Lobster Pattern by IXL, Sheffield (no England). This unusual bolster-less style demonstrated the superior knife making skills of Sheffield Cutlers. Most bolster less knives have Master blade pins extending through the scales that require a Master cutler assembler to set, and also can create pressure cracks and splits in the pearl later in life. The Mother of Pearl scales are mint, with no chips, cracks or damage. Both pearl scales have slight inside indentations where the nail nicks on the blades appear, called an easy opener style; 2 on one side, 1 on the other. Pocket worn pearl knives have a dull appearance to the surface of the delicate pearl when a knife is carried and rubbed inside a pocket over time. These scales have a beautiful iridescence found on 19th Century Mother of Pearl before the oceans were polluted; and is especially noticeable in the sunlight. This knife dates to the 1880's or earlier. Only a well to do Gentleman could have afforded a multi-bladed Pearl pocketknife like this; and was very fashionable for Gentlemen to carry a fancy pocketknife as an accessory or accouterment. Overall, 2 7/8" long closed. The 1 13/16" Master blade is hot stamped on the ricasso with "IXL GEORGE", "WOSTENHOLM", "SHEFFIELD" in 3 lines. It has the early long nail pull that goes through the ricasso, with a 15/16" grind on the top, and a 1 3/8" grind on the back side. The small 1 7/16"pen blade is hot stamped on the ricasso with "IXL", "GEORGE", "WOSTENHOLM" in 3 lines. It has the early long nail pull that goes through the ricasso, with the early hand adjusted "kick" extension to set the depth of the blade inside the hilt. The blade top has a 5/16" grind and a 1 1/4" grind on the back side. The 2 1/4" curved pipe reamer / nail file / nail cleaner blade is unmarked. The inside face of this blade is crosshatched as a file for nail filing. The outside has a finely ridged center with side borders also for nail filing, and the end is a tapered tip for nail cleaning. All the blades have a high-quality original crocus of Iron polish on them. The blades are unsharpened, with all of the original crocus of Iron final polish. All the blades stay open tightly with no wiggle, and all have a strong spring snap with no nicks or sharpening to the blade edges with full tips. The blades are in Pristine Mint condition; a rarity when taking the 140+ year old age of the blades has to be taken into consideration in any Antique knife. The knife blades have the distinctive even, smooth, color and mirror of the original Crocus of Iron polish of the blades; a signature polish used by Sheffield Cutlers on fine 19th century handmade knives. This final polish was done on wooden wheel with a leather band coated with adhesive and very fine black powder that was painstakingly applied to Antique Sheffield blades. Do not lubricate the blade in any way. It is unnecessary and can discolor the pearl. Note: it is extremely difficult to photograph iridescent pearl or shiny metal; and I took many dozens of images to try to capture the small details. Note the images are many times larger than actual size. Overall, this scarce bolster less pattern Antique 3 bladed Mother of Pearl IXL Gentleman's pocketknife is in pristine mint, unsharpened condition.
