Description: Description Fr. 242. 1886 $2 Silver Certificate Note. PCGS Banknote Superb Gem Uncirculated 68 PPQ Among the most intricate of designs from the Gilded Age, this excessive yet gorgeous $2 Silver Certificate featuring a portrait of renowned General Winfield Scott Hancock, best remembered today for his actions at the Battle of Gettysburg and less so for narrowly loosing the 1880 Presidential Election as a Democrat to Republican and fellow General, James A. Garfield of Ohio. Hancock's portrait represents a unique entry in the pantheon of American paper money along with the likes of James McPherson, George H. Thomas, Philip H. Sheridan, David Farragut and other Union military personalities whose portraits adorned the likes of notes issued in the decades following the end of the American Civil War in 1865. As for the note itself, although a small number of examples have been recorded in superior grades by PMG, the present example is something exceptional. Bearing the "Star" designation on top of the already impressive grade, PMG has only bestowed three uncirculated examples of this Friedberg with this lofty designation, of which this example represents the finest of that trio. By extension, the technical qualities of this note are as impressive as one would rightly expect. From paper which almost appears as reminiscent of a proof Obsolete Bank Note supplied by the likes of the American Bank Note Company to color that appears as "fresh" as the ink supply the day it was supplied to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing over 135 years, the qualities of this note cannot be explained in the utmost haste or simplicity. However, if one were to describe this note in three words "gorgeous," "premium," and "exceptional," would amount to an appropriate yet succinct description for this impressive offering.
