Description: An Illustrated Handbook of Japanese Flower Arrangement by Haruko Obata Very collectible book. Concise and charming handbook to the art of ikebana, or Japanese flower arrangement. This book covers the fundamentals of ikebana. Author Haruko Obata (1892-1989) was a Japanese ikebana artist and a pioneer in the field. Illustrations and diagrams by Chiura Obata (1885-1975), a Japanese-American artist and illustrator. Designed by Wilder Bentley “If you know flower arranging you do not grow old, for it is eternal.” Haruko Obata (1892-1989) was a pioneering Bay Area ikebana sensei who began displaying her classic Japanese flower arrangements to Americans as early as 1915" In 1939, Chiura Obata, a UC Berkeley art professor and painter, and his wife, Huruko Obata, a flower arranger in the ikebana style, opened a gallery/studio on Berkeley's Telegraph Avenue, where they taught classes and put on exhibitions. This illustrated pamphlet, introducing the ideas and techniques of Japanese flower arranging, was likely published to accompany Haruko Obata's classes. Her husband illustrated it with 14 line-drawing figures and a drawing for the front cover (there are also three halftone images). Haruko Obata was one of the first Ikebana instructors in America. Along with her husband, the artist and Berkeley Professor Chiura Obata, Haruko was sent to the Topaz Relocation Center a little over a year after this pamphlet's publication during the WWII incarceration of Japanese Americans. While living in Topaz, Haruko continued to pursue art; one of her vases is held in the collection of the Oakland Museum of California. She continued teaching Ikebana well into her 90s. 9 1/2" x 6 1/2," 14 pp., including illustrations. Condition: Green paper wrappers with staple binding. Black lettering and illustration on front.
