When they were found, if they refused, threats were first to be used, and if that failed, torture was to be applied, and if that failed, death was to be inflicted.” In 1892 A.T. Jones went before Congress to prevent Sunday closing of the World’s Fair in Chicago. His argument was not so much to promote or protect the Sabbath, as it was to help prevent church and state union from happening. The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are based on the idea that all people have certain fundamental rights, including religious liberty. Loughborough takes us back to when the Founders believed, and fought to protect, these principles. Will America truly renounce its original and most fundamental features? Ellen White tells us “our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with Spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and Republican government.” And once provisions are made “for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan, and that the end is near.” Ellen White takes us back to the days of The Waldenses. How did they live? How did they share God’s word during persecution? How did they suffer for their faith? And finally, will it be the same for God’s people today as the spurious Sabbath is erected and worshiped? She also answers the question on everyone’s mind: what to do in the case of Sunday laws being enforced. The testimony of R. C. Shemeall demonstrates how the number of the beast is formulated. He also shares correspondences made with the Cardinal Wm. T. Russell, discussing whether the inscription, 'Vicarius Filii Dei,' appears on the crown or mitre of the pope. The Study Guide offers clear statements made by papists who claim to have changed the Sabbath from the day which the Holy Scriptures required to another day, without the slightest Bible authority for so doing. They must penetrate wherever possible in the administration of civil affairs; must constantly use their utmost vigilance and energy to prevent the usages of liberty from going beyond the limits fixed by God's law.” Is this happening today? Where, and how? Finally the Study Guide closes with the words of the great deceiver plotting the Sabbath-keeper’s demise: “I will influence popular ministers to turn the attention of their hearers from the commandments of God. That which the Scriptures declare to be a perfect law of liberty shall be represented as a yoke of bondage. The people accept their ministers’ explanations of Scripture, and do not investigate for themselves. Therefore by working through the ministers, I can control the people according to my will. But our principal concern is to silence this sect of Sabbath-keepers. We must excite popular indignation against them. We will enlist great men and worldly-wise men upon our side, and induce those in authority to carry out our purposes. Then the Sabbath which I have set up shall be enforced by laws the most severe and exacting. Those who disregard them shall be driven out from the cities and villages, and made to suffer hunger and privation…”. Is Satan at work already? And how? The old saying 'History repeats itself" could not be ring more true. We've watch the rise and fall of the first breast and right now we see her climb to power once again. Shall I dare say, the times ahead will be worse than before. Could it be beyond what the human mind can imagine? "Let us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering; (for he [is] faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works." Hebrews 10:23,24.
