MINT CONDITION DUST JACKET CONFEDERATE CENTENNIAL STUDIES Clean, Sharp, Bright, Solidly-Bound, New Book Illustrated with a Frontispiece Photo of the Author, Henry Lea Graves PUBLISHED BY BROADFOOT PUBLISHING, WILMINGTON, IN 2000 Henry Lea Graves belonged to that small band of men who were the officers of the Confederate States Marine Corps. The Corps is virtually unknown to history. Its authorized strength called for 840 enlisted privates, 20 musicians, 82 non-commissioned officers, and 46 commissioned officers – a total of only 988, but the Corps was never recruited to full strength at any one time. An exhaustive search of Confederate records indicates that only 51 officers held Marine commissioned during the War. Henry Graves received his Marine commission in the fall of 1862 after approximately a year of service as a private in the Second Georgia Battalion of Infantry. His correspondence with his family at Mount Pleasant Plantation in Newton Country is the only series of Confederate Marine letters know to survive. The worth of the Graves letters is heightened by the fact that they include also some of the wartime correspondence of Henry Grave’s brother Iverson Dutton Graves, who served in the Confederate Navy, and occasional letters from friends and relatives. In the spring of 1861, the Graves family formed an almost idyllic picture of ante-bellum life. The book provides this unique, rare look at the life and service of a Confederate Marine Corps officer during the Civil War.
